What Assistive Tech Tools Are Available To Me

Conversationally, there are lots of assistive tools out there for the blind/visually impaired ranging from smart phones to screen readers and so much more.  I am going to give you a few of the names of devices that I personally use.

1.  Perkins Braille Writer.

Though, we are living in a technical world filled with various digital devices.  However, for some for most braille is considered to be more reliable at best.  For example, when keeping track of important information such as bank account/card numbers and ID/SSN numbers as well.  In more ways than one braille has proven to be quite beneficial for the blind in various aspects of life.

2. Victor Reader Stream.

This pocket hand held device has various uses depending upon the version of device.  Humanware has this device in more than one version that will allow for recording, listening/playing music and so much more.  The original version of the device is pretty limited compared to the newer versions.  the original has been pretty basic such as, recording notes, listening to music, books and text documents.  these and more tasks are done with the use of a SD memory card that is inserted at the top of the device.  While, connected to the computer or laptop previous files that were downloaded to your computers.  Can be transferred to your device.  Likewise, can be done in regards to MP3 music files stored on your computers.  You can also save text documents as well, such as newspapers, essays and more.  Its perfect for school and play.  however, the newer and most popular is the VRS: The Next Generation.   This version, offers more such as the internet, access to radio connections and loads more.  The device is slightly smaller than the original VRS with all of the original features just in a more compact form.  Lastly, VRS Tracker, offers a combination of with a tracker all packed into one.

3. Apple Devices/Samsung Devices.

For myself, I use the Apple devices by way of the iPhone and iPad.  however, Apple offers various device choices such as an iPod Touch and the MAC.  For most like myself they find that Apple to be a better choice due to the accessible features that are offered right out of the box.  Also, they are quite flexible.  On the other hand, Samsung can’t be left out due to their flexibility on their content regarding their devices.  In other words, where Apple is highly security conscious Samsung isn’t quite has strict.  Although, both Apple and Samsung fight to be the most popular brand on the market.  Apple, still comes out on top for those in the blind community who prefer a more accessible option in a phone or tablet.  Again, Samsung can’t be counted out because of the flexibility of the content that can be used on their devices.  Whereas, most Apple users would have to use an option, known as Jail Break to add content outside of the boundaries of Apple’s guidelines.

All in all, the above devices discussed are quite popular in and out of the blind community.  Where the digital world has made its impact on the world.  Conversely, its nice to know that throw backs, such as braille will never go away.  As long as, there are still uses for those 6 incredible dots.
